Description
The Type 2 Ka-Mi was the Imperial Japanese Navy’s first amphibious tank.Based upon the ubiquitous Ha-Go chassis with detachable pontoons and a boat hullto aid water travel. The Japanese Navy developed a series of amphibious tanks tosupport the Special Naval Landing Force during amphibious operations, such asthose which the Japanese launched throughout their conquests of early1941 and 1942.
The main armament of the Ka-Mi was a high-velocity 37mm gun with a co-axialType 97 light machine gun. It was also known to have been fitted with torpedoeson occasion – the tank could even be launched from the deck of Japanesesubmarines!
Japan found itself fighting a defensive war, and so tanks changed their roleto infantry support, functioning as mobile pillboxes. The Ka-Mi reportedly sawaction in Marianas, the Marshall Islands, Guam, New Guinea, and during theinvasion of Leyte.
